# 3.3D — Personal Willpower
>[!info]
>Emerging initially with the 3rd Chakra in our Reptile ancestor, when the Self is identified with this state of consciousness it experiences itself as a Person that has preferred sensations, but can also direct its attention and will elsewhere.
This state allows for "discipline," or the conscious overcoming of desire, as here the Self's awareness includes the desire, but is not entirely identified and thus controlled by it.
For example, when the Self is here, it can allow you to sit still in meditation and ignore the pain in your back or legs, because it is not the feeling itself (3.1D), or the desire to move (3.2D), but rather the watcher of those feelings (3.3D), and thus their master.
With this larger awareness that is less urgent, the Self becomes able to set what we would call Goals, objectives that the pursuit of may not be aesthetically desirable. In this way, the mastery of this state is essential in working towards Level 3, the Esteem drive, as it allows one to sacrifice lower desires for the pursuit of goals that may be painful to attain but increase status.
Of course, it is still useful beyond Level 3, allowing one to continually serve larger optimization thresholds (family, community, world) in ways that may go against sensory preferences.
